On Friday, Feb. 16, boys’ soccer sealed their first CIF victory against St. Mary Star of the Sea HS with a final score of 4-0.

After finishing their season as second place champions of the Valle Vista league, the team advanced to play in CIF Finals. As a result of their success, the boys are optimistic for the future.

According to captain Christian Zamorano (12), the team’s countless efforts and dedication was the root of their victory.

“Prior to the game, we watched videos of prior [game plays] and worked on our strengths and weaknesses during practice,” Zamorano said. “Our hard work and determination paid off.”

Despite the outcome of the game, left wing Jurgen Bonilla (9) acknowledges his team’s weak points and aims to improve his performance through hard work and practice.

“[During] the last few games, I have [noticed] that we need to improve on [passing] the ball and attacking offensively during plays. Personally, I will work on making a bigger impact when I play and getting more involved defensively during practice,” Bonilla said.

Center midfielder Ivan Castaneda (12) says the match encouraged the team to continue working towards their goals.

“This win definitely boosted our morale and from it, we gained confidence in ourselves,” Castaneda said. “Since this is our last year, the other seniors and I are motivated to give it our all with our last chance to play [as a team] this year.”

The following Wednesday, the boys succumbed to Webb HS and ended their CIF season with a final score of 0-1.
