On Friday, Nov. 3, girls’ tennis suffered a loss against Long Beach Poly HS with a final score of 5-13.
After finishing the season as Valle Vista league champions, the team advanced to play in the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Finals, where they compete both as a team and individually. Players Arianna Audelo (9), Victoria Kuang (12), Cherise Ching (11), and Sarina Liang (11) will compete in CIF individuals in the coming weeks.
As for CIF team, the girls defeated Brea Olinda HS in the first round with a score of 12-6, and advanced to quarterfinals where they lost to Long Beach Poly HS.
Despite the outcome of the match, head coach Jerelyn Lopez knows that the team tried their best in the sense that they went up against ranked players.
“We were well-prepared for the match, but [Long Beach] was very strong, with their four ranked players. [Regardless], I am proud of the team and the five wins,” Lopez said.
According to co-captain Michelle Yu (12), this match showed the girls what their weaknesses were, which made it a beneficial learning experience.
“This game was good practice for our players since a few of Long Beach’s players were ranked. It showed us areas where we need improvement, especially if our players want to [get further] into CIF next year,” Yu said.
As for CIF Individuals, doubles player Cherise Ching (11) set personal goals for herself and her partner.
“Last year, our doubles one were phenomenal players and a very strong pair, yet it was still difficult for them to get past round one of individuals. This year, I hope my partner Sarina and I can get as close as they did,” Ching said.
CIF individuals finals will begin on Monday, Nov. 20.
